Abstract

An overwhelming body of scientific literature supports the concept that what each of us does in our daily lives has a profound impact on both our short- and long-term health and quality of life. Nutrition plays a key role in many of the decisions we make on a daily basis. Nutrition practices, however, must be put in the context of an overall approach to healthy living. This overall discipline has been called “Lifestyle Medicine.” Despite many years of recommendations from numerous scientific bodies, only a distinct minority of individuals in the United States are following many of the key nutritional practices such as consuming more fruits and vegetables and maintaining a healthy body weight. Nutritional behaviors are complex and influenced by many factors including individual, family, community, and public policy factors. Even though the knowledge base for sound nutritional practices is secure, implementation of this knowledge to help individuals follow healthy nutritional practices will remain a key in helping them lead healthier lives and lowering their risk of chronic disease.
