The Heart of Clinical Relationships: Doctor–Patient Communication in Rheumatology

Abstract

What makes for the best clinical relationships in rheumatology? This chapter examines what is currently known about doctor–patient communication in rheumatology, drawing on examples from anthropological research to illustrate the successes and tensions of communication between rheumatologists and patients. The challenges of doctor–patient communication are analyzed drawing on the literature to examine differing role expectations, the external constraints on clinical appointments, and the vulnerability of patients while balancing this with the clinical work rheumatologists need to complete in appointments. Ultimately the chapter argues that communicative competence is needed to balance clinical competence.
