Power Systems Research and Operation

Abstract

This chapter analyzes the prospects for global development of energy storage systems (ESS). The global experience in the application of various technologies of energy storage is considered. The state of global energy storage, its grow’s potential, and Ukraine’s share in the total statistics are examined. Statistical data on the quantity of global energy storage systems projects and their capacities have been studied. Analysis of technical and economic indicators of energy storage technologies was carried out. Possible areas of various energy storage technologies application in power systems, including integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and distributed generation, were determined. It was revealed that energy storage is a promising way to improve the quality and reliability of distribution grids. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that Ukraine is gradually taking important steps to develop the use of energy storage, introducing the regulatory and legislative basis for the service implementation. This study uses a qualitative strategic planning methodology with a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis to take into account activities and initiatives related to the development of energy storage systems implementing them into the power system. The research showed that growing share of RES, lowering the prices of some storage technologies, and increasing social awareness of climate change can provide the necessary opportunities for the development of ESS in the terms of Ukraine.
