Abstract

Though a rare complication, the development of iliocaval occlusion from an inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) can cause significant clinical consequences, including the development of severe venous stasis symptoms ranging from edema through venous stasis ulceration. The historical approach for treatment of IVCF-related occlusions has been recanalization and stent placement through the offending device; however, the development of advanced retrieval techniques does not permit retrieval of these devices, with data suggesting that filter retrieval prior to recanalization may improve patency rates. We will discuss key clinical factors and considerations in the management of chronic IVCF-related iliocaval occlusion.
