Abstract
This chapter presents an approach for information retrieval and administration of distributed documents in Internet. The work is presented in the context of the Phronesis Project. The main result for the project is free open-source software intended for the creation of digital libraries over the Internet. The software, known as Phronesis Server or Phronesis for short, allows the creation, administration, and maintenance of distributed digital libraries. Phronesis can be accessed and managed from a WWW browser and provides services for submission of digital documents, indexing and compression of documents, searching of documents written either in Spanish or English, accessing of the entire document, and services for access control. Documents on Phronesis can be images, audio, video, text, and any type of digital document. Phronesis is also built from open-source freeware software, and in the chapter we illustrate the successful use of this type of tools in the development of Internet-based applications such as Phronesis.
The name of Phronesis is taken from the Greek word for “practical wisdom” Phronesis can be found at http://copernico.mty.itesm.mx/~tempo/Projects/
