Extracellular Products of Algae

  • Chapter
Algae and Man

Abstract

Since ancient times, it has been recognized that fresh-water algae possess particular properties. Filamentous algae contained in natural waters and known asConferves were gathered and used to hasten the healing of sores. On the other hand, numerous observations carried out during the last century showed that certain algae are capable of yielding highly toxic substances, in standing waters or even in the sea, and that these substances can be fatal to man or to the animal who has absorbed them either directly or indirectly. It is only within the last fifteen years, however, that the production of active substances originating from algae, and their effects on living beings, have been studied on a scientific basis.
