Congenital Heart Diseases and Pregnancy

  • Chapter
Principles of Medical Therapy in Pregnancy

Abstract

Adult survival of patients with congenital heart disease results from natural selection or from the benefits of surgery. Operation not only increases the life-span of patients who have anomalies with an inherent tendency for long survival but also permits increasing numbers of women with disorders that were previously fatal in early life to reach childbearing age. This chapter deals with pregnancy in women with either unoperated or operated congenital heart disease. Attention is paid to the problems in the mother and to the effects of maternal congenital heart disease on the fetus.
