Abstract

The Algerian war proved to be a revealing test for the French Communist Party. Jean Baby summed up best the impact of the war on French politics and the issues with which it confronted the Party:

[The Algerian war] called everything into question including the institutions of France as events have proved. The Algerian affair highlighted, and continues to do so, the problems of French imperialism, of the political role of the army, the fascists danger, the level of wages, the future of the youth, etc. It could not be separated from the problems of Marxism-Leninism either.1
