Abstract

Tinbergen was born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1903. He studied mathematical physics at Leiden, received his doctorate in 1929 and then joined the Central Bureau of Statistics at The Hague. For a period in the Thirties (1936–8) he worked at the Leauge of Nations in Geneva under Alexander Loveday. After World War II he became Director of the Central Planning Bureau at The Hague and served in the capacity from 1945 to 1951. Tinbergen was appointed an extraordinary Professor of Economics at the Netherlands School of Economics in 1933. On his retirement from the Directorship of the Central Planning Bureau in 1955 this was made into a full Professorship with a focus on development problems of less developed countries, which he held till 1973. Together with Ragnar Frisch, Tinbergen was awarded the first Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1969. He was also elected the first Chairman of the UN Committee on Development Planning.
