Definition

The past few decades have witnessed an enormous surge in the synthesis of metal-based nanoparticles using plant extracts, gums, resins, and oils. However, one of the latest trends in this arena is the use of essential oil in aromatic medicinal plants as bioreductants and potential bio-cappers. In this process, the toxic bulky metals are converted to nontoxic nanoparticles with potential bioactivities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anticancer activities. The method is a refined, environmentally benign and cheaper approach toward the synthesis of metal nanoparticles. Recent studies reveal the outstanding catalytic applications of these nanomaterials, particularly, in dye degradation and reduction of organic pollutants subsequently opening doors toward environmental remediation.
