Definition

Lignin nanocomposites are lignin-based materials incorporated with nanoparticles, nanotubes, or lamellar nanostructure at 0.5% and 5% by weight level, into a matrix of standard material, resulting in radical enhancement in properties such as mechanical strength, hardiness, and electrical or thermal conductivity.

Introduction

Lignin plays a prime role in plants including mechanical support, protection against chemical or microbial attack, and transportation of water and minerals. It constitutes 30% of non-fossil organic carbon and serves as a natural raw material comprising aromatic moieties largely. Globally, the by-product of paper and pulp industries approximately produces 50 million tons of lignin of which 98% are incinerated to generate steam and energy, while 1–2% of the lignin are employed in the chemical conversion for the production of lignosulfonates.
