Robert Bremner was an American social historian whose work focuses on benevolence and social welfare. He is regarded as a pioneer in the historical examination of philanthropy, childhood, and poverty in the United States.

Basic Biographical Information

Born in Brunswick, Ohio, in 1917, Bremner received his B.A. from Baldwin-Wallace College (1935) and the MA (1939) and Ph.D. (1943) from The Ohio State University. During WWII he worked in Washington, D.C. as a civilian employee of the War Department and the Red Cross. From 1946 to 1980, he was a member of the history department of The Ohio State University during which time he advised over 40 Ph.D. students. After his retirement in 1980, Bremner continued to write and mentor students. He was the recipient of several honors throughout his lifetime from organizations and institutions including the Rockefeller Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Charles Warren Center at Harvard University.
