Definitions
Dam-related displacement is the process whereby persons or groups of persons are forced or obliged to leave their homes or places of habitual residence to facilitate its construction, and these groups generally would not have crossed internationally recognized state borders. The dam may be for irrigation or hydropower development or to facilitate potable water supplies, or it can be a multipurpose dam, combining two or all of these functions (Herschy 1998).
