Adequate sanitation in SDG6 is defined by the World Health Organization as the “use of an improved type of sanitation facility that is not shared with other households and from which the excreta produced are either safely treated in situ or transported and treated off-site” (World Health Organization 2020). Safely disposed in situ or safely managed refers to removing excreta without human contact. In an in situ or onsite sanitation system, sewage and wastewater are collected, sorted, or treated on the site where they are generated. In an offsite sanitation system, excreta and wastewater are transferred to a sanitation system elsewhere, using a sewer technology (Tilley et al. 2014).
