Overview
Management—the professional administration of business concerns, public undertakings and organizations in general—is a topical subject, particularly in relation to health and healthcare services. This chapter will explore why this topic should form part of the health studies curriculum for students, regardless of their professional background or personal inclination to be involved in management. The chapter outlines some of the major theoretical concepts relating to organization and management studies and applies these to the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The NHS is a unique organization with a huge and diverse remit and workforce, and its scale of operations means that many different organizational and management styles have been tried and tested. Part 1 focuses on theories relating to organizations and how they operate within a broad political and policy context. Part 2 discusses different management theories and models and their relevance to the NHS, and it also discusses contemporary issues such as what best motivates workers and how leaders can enthuse their staff. The chapter concludes with a case study on the development of a local obesity strategy.
