Abstract
Building and retaining a high-performing team of psychiatrists dedicated to the biopsychosocial needs of highly complex and complicated patient populations challenges even the most seasoned organizational leaders. Given the many barriers that limit the growth and development of a psychiatric team, it is imperative that organizations create and formalize ongoing, intentional strategies to recruit and retain a strong set of clinicians so as to meet the significant demand for community-based behavioral health services. The objective of this chapter is threefold: (1) to review systemic challenges that affect workforce development in community psychiatry, (2) to consider practical approaches to recruitment and retention of a psychiatry workforce in community-based behavioral health, and (3) to describe broad actions that the field can collectively take to ensure that the workforce can adequately deliver quality care to those in need.
