Abstract
The US Department of Veterans Affairs (officially “DVA” but still widely referred to as “VA”) is a Cabinet-level agency that is directed by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The largest component within VA is the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), responsible for healthcare and related services. The identified missions of VA include an emphasis on clinical care, advancement in medical research, upholding the educational efforts of medical training programs, as well as assistance during national medical emergencies. This creates the foundation for a comprehensive and progressive healthcare system and is the basis by which mental healthcare for military veterans has evolved in the quality and the breadth of the multitude of services offered by the VA. This chapter provides an in-depth look at the ways that VA strives to realize its four missions for the benefit of veterans, caregivers, and their communities.
