Health Self-Management: The Emerging Importance of Trauma and Resilience

Textbook of Community Psychiatry

Abstract

The concept of health self-management has been employed widely in the treatment of chronic physical and behavioral health conditions. This concept emphasizes the importance of an active and involved person in managing enduring health problems. Behavioral health- and physical health-focused self-management programs typically share a number of common elements including basic information about specific health conditions, factors contributing to these health problems, treatment options, problem-solving strategies, goal setting, and informed decision making.

Traditionally, one area less likely to be emphasized as an integral part of a self-management program was the role played by adversity, trauma, and resilience. The expanding trauma and resilience literature offers valuable insights to inform an integrated and comprehensive health self-management framework.

This chapter makes the case for creating the next generation of self-management programs that fully integrate the principles of trauma and resilience into health self-management approaches. Topics to include in a comprehensive approach are illustrated in a newly developed resiliency building curriculum for adults. Implications for the role of community psychiatrists will also be discussed.
