Abstract

This chapter begins with an overview of psychiatric rehabilitation, including a brief history and current conceptual frameworks in the field. Next, major psychiatric rehabilitation approaches are categorized based on their treatment targets: psychosocial functioning, core psychopathology, and comorbid conditions. The bulk of the chapter summarizes psychiatric rehabilitation interventions that are not covered elsewhere in this textbook. Specifically, we review social skills training, cognitive remediation, social cognitive training, and physical health management. For each intervention, we provide the rationale for the service, outline the intervention and how it is delivered, describe research on treatment outcomes for the treatment, and provide additional resources for providers interested in pursuing more information about how to implement these specific interventions.
