Abstract

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective, well-studied, and widely implemented psychological intervention for most of the diagnoses encountered in community mental health settings. It is a powerful tool that is practical, is adaptable, can be offered in groups and individually, and is widely available in most healthcare settings. CBT is recovery based, emphasizes improving functional capacity over diagnostic rigidity, requires active participation by both recipient and clinician, is compatible with psychopharmacology and complementary interventions (mindfulness, exercise), and gives primary focus to individualized treatment planning and the encouragement of hopefulness and positive goals. The basis of CBT is recognizing how thoughts and beliefs impact our interactions with the world and how examining them and considering alternative explanations can lead to change. It incorporates mindfulness and behavioral challenges and practice. This chapter covers CBT for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and panic, insomnia, and suicide.
