Women’s Mental Health: Core Concepts for Community Psychiatry

Textbook of Community Psychiatry

Abstract

Women’s mental health (WMH) refers to the biological, psychological, and social aspects of mental health that differentially affect women. These include the study of sex differences, the influence of female reproductive hormones on psychiatric conditions, and the impact of societal influences on the mental health of women. This chapter aims to synthesize knowledge within the field in a practical and useful manner for community psychiatrists. The chapter is divided into two subsections. The first section summarizes key concepts in sexual health, contraceptive care, preconception counseling, perinatal psychiatry, and the perimenopausal period. As women with SMI often have unique needs regarding their reproductive and sexual healthcare, community psychiatrists have a central role to play in the treatment of women through these critical life periods. The second section addresses experiences of violence which disproportionately affect women and have pervasive effects on health: intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. This section includes practical guidance for the community psychiatrist on how to identify and respond to these experiences as encountered in clinical care. Throughout the chapter, helpful tables and figures are included to support clinical practice.
