Traumatic Stress in the Community: Identification and Intervention

  • Chapter

Textbook of Community Psychiatry

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the current understanding of the physical and emotional responses to events that threaten the physical or psychic integrity of an individual, termed traumatic stress. It includes the phenomena of traumatic stress disorders and the evidence for effective intervention thereof. A discussion of epidemiological, experiential, and biological underpinnings of these disorders, as well as the experience of secondary trauma, is also integral to this chapter. These points are followed by thorough exposition of the range of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions, as well as how they integrate into recovery-oriented systems programming.
