Abstract
Prototyping is the sixth step of the EDP (Figure 6.1). Prototyping is the process of creating a solution to a design challenge. The goals of prototyping are to test an idea or concept, explore brainstormed ideas, compare potential design solutions, communicate design ideas, and/or evaluate a feature. For example, suppose a team is tasked with creating a hand-washing station for use in a low-income community. One prototype could be non-functional and show the overall shape of the station, while another prototype could demonstrate the effective flow of water. The iterative nature of prototyping and exploring aspects of the design is key to developing a successful solution. The process of evaluating a prototype’s success is described in the following step.
