Step 5: Evaluate Solutions

  • Chapter
Introduction to Engineering Design

Abstract

Evaluate solutions is the fifth step of the EDP (Figure 5.1). After brainstorming, teams will have numerous solution ideas that must be narrowed down to a couple viable designs. The strategy for narrowing ideas will depend on how many initial ideas were generated, as well as whether teams brainstormed full or partial solutions. Evaluating ideas with a systematic and quantitative method ensures that solutions with the best potential for satisfying design criteria are carried out in the prototyping phase.
