Abstract

This chapter summarizes the pharmacology, and practical uses of local anesthetic medications in the practice of anesthesiology. The mechanism of action for all local anesthetics, as well as the fundamental differences between amide and ester families are discussed. Dosing guidelines for regional anesthesia, and an analysis of local anesthetic adjuvants is provided. Special considerations for choosing individual medications are listed as well. The treatment of conditions arising from local anesthetic administration including systemic toxicity, and methemoglobinemia are presented for review.
