Erythromycin estolate

  • Chapter
TOP 200

Abstract

Erythromycin, from the macrolide group of antibiotics, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It is widely used as an alternate to penicillin and is one of the safest antibiotics currently in use. Besides its use as an alternate to penicillin, erythromycin is the recommended drug in many disease states. It diffuses readily into most body fluids, but only low concentrations are achieved in the spinal fluid. The oral forms are preferred though these are inactivated to varying degrees by gastric juice.
