Abstract

Béla Balassa, holding degrees in law and economics, left his native Hungary when the Soviet tanks put down the 1956 revolution. In 1959 he received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale. From 1966 until his death in 1991 he was professor of economics at Johns Hopkins and a consultant to the World Bank. Influenced by events in his youth, Béla held a deep lifelong belief in political and economic freedom.
