Abstract

De Moivre was born in Vitry-le-François on 26 May 1667, of French Protestant stock. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 he fled to London, where he earned a precarious living as a mathematical author and tutor until his death there on 27 November 1754.
