Shonfield, Andrew Akiba (1917–1981)

Abstract

Andrew Shonfield was educated at St. Paul’s School and at Magdalen College, Oxford. His career evolved from journalism to research in political economy. During four years, at the turn of the 1950s he was economic editor of The Observer. He then moved to the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) to be in charge of its research and became the Institute’s Director in 1972. From 1978 until his death in 1981, he was professor of economics at the European University Institute in Florence, responsible for the economic research programme of this Institute. Shonfield’s public activities included membership of the Royal Commission on Trade Unions (1965–68) and of the FCO Review Committee on Overseas Representation (1968–69). From 1969 to 1971 he chaired the Social Science Research Council. He was knighted in 1978.
