Abstract
Slichter was both a wide-ranging general economist and a scholar in industrial relations, regarding the two disciplines as parts of a seamless whole. He wrote an introductory economics textbook (1931) and was probably the most widely read economist by the general public of his day. He was a highly respected economic forecaster, Paul Samuelson calling him ‘our best economic forecaster for the period 1935–55’, and served as president of the American Economic Association, 1940–1. In industrial relations his two large classics (1941 and 1960) grew out of extended field work.
