Structure of Higher Education System

Description

Higher education comes under the purview of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Higher education is provided by universities, university colleges and several training colleges and institutes, and all institutions, private and public, undergo quality assurance and accreditation overseen by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). Public institutions are mainly subsidized by the state whereas private institutions rely on private funding.

Stages of studies

University level first stage

Undergraduate level

The first phase leads to a Bachelor's degree. It usually lasts for three years, except in Pharmacy, Nursing, Veterinary Science and Engineering, which take four years while Medicine takes five years.

University level second stage

Graduate level

Two years' study following upon the Bachelor's degree leads to a Master's degree. Students may also be awarded a postgraduate certificate or diploma after one year's study...
