The Games that took place in Rio de Janeiro in Aug. 2016 were the XXXI Olympiad. Nineteen countries have hosted the Summer Olympic Games, including the United States four times, the United Kingdom three times, and Australia, France, Germany and Greece twice each. Today there are 206 National Olympic Committees.

According to the Olympic Charter: ‘The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity’.
