Natural Disasters Chronology for 2017
Dec. – Two consecutive tropical storms—Urduja and Tembin—hit the Philippines killing at least 320 people, displacing over 400,000 and affecting more than 2.3 m.
Nov. – Tropical Cyclone Ockhi, which struck southern India and Sri Lanka, killed 115 people and left around 61,000 homeless.
Nov. – Typhoon Damrey affected more than 4.3 m. people and caused some 110 deaths in Vietnam.
Nov. – A 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the border region between Iran and Iraq, particularly the province of Kermanshah and governorate of Halabja, killing at least 530 people and injuring nearly 7,400 in both countries. Hundreds of villages and at least 70,000 people were affected. Several historic sites and buildings were also severely damaged.
Oct. – At least 44 people died and some 40,000 were displaced in California’s deadliest ever wildfires.
Oct. – Flash flood triggered by heavy rainfalls left 68 people dead, 34 missing and 32 injured in Vietnam.
