Abstract
Just as supply and demand curves have structured thinking about markets, most recent analytical work on arms races has been structured by two equations proposed by Lewis Fry Richardson (1881–1953), a Quaker and Fellow of the Royal Society, known also for his publications on meteorology and his quantification of war. His studies, begun during the First World War, only gained wider recognition with the posthumous publication of two books collecting his work, Richardson (1960a, b). His theories are reviewed in Rapoport (1957) and some biographical details are given in Richardson (1957).
