Abstract

John Rae was born in Wick, Caithness, Scotland on 26 May 1845, the eldest son of William Rae who was for some years Provost of the town. Rae received his early education at Edinburgh Academy, before proceeding to university in the city. He graduated in 1866 with first class honours in philosophy. Rae was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1897 by his alma mater. He died on 19 April 1915, having spent the last 15 years of his life in London, and was buried in Wick.
