Abstract
Vickrey was born in Canada in 1914. He was educated at Yale and Columbia, joining the faculty of the latter institution after World War II and maintaining that association for the remainder of his professional career. Possessing a fertile and original mind, Vickrey became as famous for the number of pioneering ideas that were embedded quietly in his works and went unnoticed until later as for his more immediately recognized work on taxation, transportation, and public utility pricing.
