James McKeen Cattell (1860-05-23–1944-01-20) was an American psychologist. He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, and passed away in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1880, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College. He then studied in Germany for 2 years, first at the University of Göttingen and then at the University of Leipzig, under the guidance of Rudolf H. Lotze and Wilhelm Wundt. After returning to the United States in 1882, he studied under Granville S. Hall at Johns Hopkins University. In 1883, he returned to Leipzig University for the second time and became Wundt’s first assistant. In 1886, he earned his Ph.D. in psychology. In 1888, he went to the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom as a lecturer, where he was influenced by Francis Galton. Later, he was appointed at the University of Pennsylvania, becoming the world’s first professor of psychology.
