Abstract

Dementia is a pathological, neurodegenerative process leading to progressive decline in cognitive and functional abilities. It has multiple causes, diverse manifestations, and heterogeneity with respect to the impact of sex or gender on prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes (Podcasy and Epperson, Dialogues Clin. Neurosci. 18, 437–446, 2016). Different types of dementia cause different LUTS at differing time points of the disease and need different therapeutic approaches. However, more research is needed to fully understand the link between urinary incontinence and different types of dementia.
