Introduction

School leaders in contemporary Vietnam are affected by a number of forces, including globalization and integration, changing government policy, and Western-centric ideas about democratic leadership, in addition to traditional cultural influences. Of these forces, traditional values are believed to exert the strongest influence on school leadership. This chapter discussed how Vietnamese school leadership is influenced and shaped by traditional Confucian values. Although the imprint of Chinese civilization and Confucian thought has waned in recent years, the core values of Confucianism remain deeply rooted in Vietnamese society, influencing the country’s philosophy, culture, society, economy, and politics (Ashwill and Diep 2005; Jamieson 1993).
