Indigenous Science and Mathematics in the Twenty-First Century


Bridging cultures; Indigenous science and mathematics; Indigenous ways of knowing and learning; Western science and mathematics


The use of science and technology is pervasive in all sectors of the economy, and the retirement of the baby boomer population will create a severe shortage of science and mathematics-related professionals at all levels. The median age of the fastest-growing population in Canada, the Indigenous population, is 10–15 years less than the median age of the dominant settler population and, as such, is a valuable, logical, and naturalresident population upon which to draw. If this is to occur, significant and early attention to Indigenous education particularly in the sciences and mathematics at all levels, and retention to graduation, is essential to opening doors of access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related degrees and career paths at the tertiary level.
