Introduction: Understanding the Student Experience

In many contemporary universities, “the student experience” is increasingly coming to dominate much policy and practice. Ensuring that students have a good “experience” is built into university mission statements, is at the heart of student charters, and drives the practices of teaching, learning, and assessment. The student experience is increasingly one among many factors measured and ranked, such as academic achievement, sports facilities, campus location, student diversity, student safety, or environmental awareness. That universities take seriously the student experience – in all its iterations – is reflected in the energy that they expend on ensuring that their respective institutions are repeatedly at, or near the top of, the multiple league tables of institutions offering an excellent student experience.
