C. S. Peirce wrote very little about communication and even less about education (see however Colapietro et al. 2005). Given his interest in signs, it is surprising that he did not devote more attention to communication. Given his theoretical bent, it is less surprising that he failed to make education a focus of concern. But it would be a mistake to conclude that he was uninterested in these topics; both were to him of personal and philosophical concern. His vision of the university is especially noteworthy (Midtgarden 2005), while his scattered remarks about conversational exchanges need to be collated and examined.

When he took up these latter topics, he obviously found them absorbing and important. What he did write about them was insightful and suggestive. Moreover, the implications of his most distinctive doctrines for our understanding of communication and education are numerous and profound.
