Definition

Assisted living facilities (ALFs) are a long-term residential option for older adults that provide a mixture of independent living and available round-the-clock medical assistance. These facilities aim to create a homelike environment for older adults to allow them to live as independently as possible when they may no longer be able to be completely self-sufficient. It provides the opportunity for elderly individuals to maintain dignity and autonomy while getting the support that they need. The services provided are based on the specific needs of the individual and can change over time as those needs may increase. This environment is attractive to older adults considering that many prefer to receive care in a homelike setting (Brodie and Blendon 2001; Grabowski et al. 2012).
