Abstract

With the evolution of specificity of usage in orthopaedic surgery, it has been perceived that specific regions need instruments with specific designs to access these areas. Further performing the surgical procedure in specific region needs instruments to be safe enough for the surrounding vital organs. This is very important in pelvis region due to the complexity in access the inside cavities. This has led to specific designs of tissue retractors, longer drill bits, screw drivers, drill sleeves, etc. The special angulation in retractors made these specific to the approaches in pelvic acetabular surgery. Likewise implants like pelvic plates have also been designed in shape, size and the material property allowing more malleability for easier contouring. The external fixator is also the requirement for the pelvi-acetabular area and its assembly also needs to be applicable to curvatures of the pelvis. This chapter is a review of all these basic instruments and implants currently in use for pelvic and acetabular surgeries.
