Abstract

Fractures of the scapula are not common in occurrence. It is generally associated with high-energy injuries; therefore, other concomitant life-or-limb threatening injuries take precedence. Majority of scapular fractures are amenable for conservative treatment; however, numerous aspects of scapular fracture management have been debated for long and are still evolving. Explicit criteria have been laid down for surgical fixation of certain fracture patterns. Another point of contention is choosing optimal implant; myriad fixation constructs and devices add to the conundrum. Mini-fragment plate and/or screws are commonly employed implants for fixation. Complex three-dimensional geometry coupled with uneven bone mass pose daunting challenge to strategize optimal osteosynthesis. Of late, evolution of pre-contoured site-specific anatomical plates have stoked enthusiasm for its ease in application. This chapter dwells on surgical management of scapular fractures and various fixation strategies.
