Abstract

The Ilizarov ring fixator was developed by Dr. Gavril Ibramovich Ilizarov from Kurgan, Siberia, in Russia, after World War II. It was initially used for the management of non-unions, correction of deformities, osteomyelitis, etc. The fixator became popular in the rest of the world only in the 1980s. The Ilizarov fixator is very useful in the treatment of acute fractures, particularly when there is bone loss and a compromised soft tissue envelope. Although technically difficult with a definite learning curve, once mastered, the Ilizarov fixator offers a very useful treatment option in the definitive management of many complex fractures.
