Abstract

In this chapter, the authors explore the principles, indications, and technical considerations of primary joint arthroplasty in fractures around the knee joint. In the elderly patients, due to poor bone stock, osteoporosis, and significant comorbidities, the joint reconstruction could be quite challenging. Multiple operations are best avoided in these patients; a primary arthroplasty surgery may be the best approach in order to have a quicker recovery. This chapter reviews the current literature on managing such fractures with either primary arthroplasty alone, or in combination with reconstruction/fracture fixation, and choice of available implants.
