Tundish metallurgy is the process in which molten steel quality is improved in the tundish for continuous steel casting. The tundish is between the steel ladle and crystallizer. In the early years of continuous steel casting, tundish was merely used to store and distribute molten steel. The requirements for steel quality became increasingly high, and people no longer saw tundish as a simple vessel. Instead, tundish was used to further remove the inclusions, so the concept of tundish metallurgy was proposed in the early 1980s. Tundish metallurgy is able to prevent secondary oxidation, adjust microalloying elements composition, gather and float inclusions, and control the degree of superheat of fluid molten steel. The tundish metallurgy technologies include structure optimization by tundish, decrease of secondary pollution of molten steel, tundish heating, microalloying in tundish, and cyclic use of hot tundish.
