The Sinicization of Buddhist Scriptural Language

Abstract

Soon after Buddhism was introduced to China during the Eastern and Western Han, a great number of Buddhist scriptures were translated into Chinese that possess a comparatively large number of unique characteristics when compared with locally produced literature. Just as Buddhism itself underwent a process of “Sinicization,” many lexical and syntactic elements drawn from the language employed in the Buddhist classics were also gradually assimilated into the popular vernacular and brought about a “Sincization” of Buddhist language. This chapter takes three terms, ziji, shengse, and xianzai, which exhibit differing degrees of lexical content and function to discuss concrete examples of how the spread of Buddhism affected the Chinese language. That is, the causes, processes, and channels by which Buddhist language was “Sinicized.”
