Pygmy Dipole Resonance: Experimental Studies by Different Probes

Abstract

The study of electric dipole strength in atomic nuclei in the region of the neutron separation energy – commonly denoted as “pygmy dipole resonance (PDR)” – has attracted a lot of interest in the last decades. This is partly due to its relevance for neighboring research fields like nuclear astrophysics and its predicted enhancement in exotic, neutron-rich systems. It has been shown that only a combination of complementary experimental tools yielding different observables enables a deeper understanding of this excitation mode and a robust comparison with theory. This chapter presents basic properties of some of the experimental methods, discusses their assets and drawbacks, and gives a summary of the present status.
